HiSET Math Practice Test
If you're on this page, there's a good chance you're either taking the HiSET in the near future, or are considering doing so. Regardless of where you fall on the spectrum, you've come to the right place! This page is one of many you'll find featuring information pertaining exclusively to the HiSET test and its content.
Before we get more specific, however, we want to first go over exactly what the HiSET test is. The HiSET, known in full as the High School Equivalency Test, is considered a viable alternative to the GED. If you have not finished high school and are looking to earn the equivalent of your high school diploma, earning a passing score on the HiSET will grant you the certification you need.
The HiSET will cover all of the core subjects you would have been exposed to throughout high school—and are meant to closely mirror the curriculum being taught to high school students today. These subjects will include Social Studies, Reading, Science, Mathematics, and Writing. The information on this particular page will address the Mathematics portion of the HiSET exam.
Why does Mathematics feature on this exam? For starters, it helps you to figure out how to interpret numerical information—a skill you will need for almost every career path. Whether you want to pursue engineering or art, having basic mathematical knowledge will improve your ability to thrive professionally.
The HiSET Mathematics exam will span for about 50 questions total. All questions will be in multiple choice format. You will be expected to complete these questions within an hour and a half (90 minute) time frame. It is worth noting that this exam is the only one where you will be allowed to use a calculator to help answer questions. However, the type of calculator you can use will vary from testing site to testing site. You will not be allowed to bring your own, but will have to ask for one from your testing administrator. Furthermore, the calculator you will be given will be only a scientific or a standard type. Considering the time limit on this exam, we encourage you to aim your study efforts so you can answer as many questions as possible without the help of a calculator. Doing so will help you to test more efficiently.
Additionally, you will also have to possess some knowledge of mathematical formulas for this exam. While you will be given a reference, it will not include all formulas you need to know. Be sure to research the basic algebraic formulas as part of your study plan so you can approach these problems effectively.
The Mathematics portion of the HiSET exam will cover four distinct knowledge categories, with each test question falling under one of them. These categories are as follows:
-
-
Algebraic Concepts will make up the largest amount of test questions, as it accounts for 45 percent of the test's full content. As the name implies, questions under this category will mainly deal with the strategies and ideas taught in the average Algebra class, including graphing, expressions, equations, and similar elements.
-
-
-
Numbers and Operations on Numbers takes up 19 percent of test questions. Questions under this category will require you to work with numbers in various ways, from rounding them to converting them into another format.
-
-
-
Data Analysis, Probability, and Statistics is one of the smallest categories, taking up 18 percent of test content. This category involves similar problem solving strategies, which will require you to interpret mathematical data.
-
-
Measurement and Geometry also accounts for 18 percent of the test's questions. This final category will ask you to evaluate shapes, using given information to make calculations about their size and similar qualities.
Alongside these knowledge categories, test questions will also be organized under what is known as Process Categories—or, more specifically, the strategies you will have to use to answer test questions. These strategies will require you to Synthesize Data and Solve Problems, Analyze and Interpret Information, and Understand Mathematical Concepts and Procedures.
